Douglas Gil

«I capture unexpressed emotions that some might consider negative, yet their nature depends on the perspective from which they are observed.» – D. Gil

Born in Venezuela and currently residing in Miami, this artist has over 20 years of experience in contemporary art. His work is distinguished by the representation of the human figure with deformations, particularly in facial features, drawing inspiration from expressionist and surrealist movements. Through symbolic elements, his work evokes a deep interest in exploring the mind, dreams, and perception of reality. His artistic practice seeks to express emotions that often remain unexplored, inviting the viewer to engage in deep reflection on the nature of existence.

In a society where happiness is imposed as a standard and social media is filled with carefully curated images of joy, it is worth asking: are we only what we choose to show? Do we not also dwell in the shadows of our repressed emotions? This artist, fully aware of this dichotomy, evokes and brings visibility to emotions inherent to the human experience-such as anger, rage, and melancholy. While these emotions are often perceived negatively, the artist sees them as essential elements of existence, capable of fostering deep connections and a genuine understanding of the self. His work transforms these sensations into catalysts for dialogue and introspection, allowing the viewer to recognize and connect with their own emotional sensitivity.

The artist’s creative process unfolds in multiple stages. Initially, he seeks to create an environment conducive to inspiration, often nocturnal and solitary, enriched by music or immersed in contemplative silence. He then faces the blank canvas, a moment of introspection and contemplation that serves as a ritual of initiation into the work, where the emptiness of the canvas becomes a space of infinite possibilities.

Although he explores multiple media in his practice, the artist has favored the use of oil and acrylic over the years. His aspiration is for his message to transcend mere aesthetic appreciation, establishing a profound emotional connection with viewer.Through his art, he invites the audience to confront repressed emotions and silences, promoting the idea that understanding and accepting these experiences lead to greater self-awareness and empathy toward others.
